TW: horror movie/intense imagery
I’m a fan of Carpenter’s movies and have been re-watching faves like They Live, Escape from New York, and The Thing. Then it occurred to me I hadn’t seen this one yet. Wow, what a mind-bendy, twisty experience that was!
The movie does an excellent job of showing how someone’s perception of reality gets bent way the heck out of whack, the power of words to create worlds, and how cults form and become violent in defending their distorted perception of reality.
The movie's central set piece, the “black church,” is evocative of an otherworldly atmosphere-- and it’s a real place.
Also? Sam Neill remains one of my all-time crushes. He’s willing to take on odd and challenging roles and goes for it at full speed.
