June gloom has returned and I love it! Took a long brisk walk this morning.

Finished another book that’s been on my TBR for a while: A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan.

Equal parts confusing and compelling. I found this more an interesting intellectual read instead of bonding with the characters, but it’s worth sticking with it to get to the Power Point chapter.

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you

in spite of everything,

don’t do it.

While cleaning up some papers today, I came across an old print out from the poets site of the Charles Bukowski poem “so you want to be a writer?”

So I sat down, read the poem, and thought about it. And TBH, I agree with him.

Disclaimer time: I know Buk is problematic and an utter misanthrope.

Still, I don’t think you can force creativity. The best writing I ever did was when I felt the energy behind it.

Besides, what’s the use of working on something for hours if the energy isn’t there and you don’t have the passion for it?

Recent reads:

  • What We Lose by Zinzi Clemmons, another title that’s been on my TBR for a while.: A novel about a young woman dealing with the illness and death of her mother set against the backdrop of immediate post-apartheid South Africa. As a result of her deeply held grief, the main character makes questionable decisions. Well written, thoughtful, but very sad.

  • Then, something different and a nostalgia read, The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot. First read the book years ago when the movie came out. Personally, I liked the book, but I understand the changes made for the movie and why many would prefer the movie version: the re-location from gritty, cynical New York to dreamy San Francisco, cutting back on the book’s brash and edgy humor, and of course, featuring the upbeat acting styles of Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews (who in particular gives us a much more likable Grandmere). The book interests me as a pop culture historian for its role in the Millennial princess trend and how life imitates art: in 2006, it was revealed that Prince Albert of Monaco had a daughter living in the Coachella Valley, a child from an affair with a waitress, a real life Mia Thermopolis.

heart shaped fractal pattern in green

Experimenting with fractal flames and I love them. So ethereal and wispy. I like finding the hear-shaped patterns.

Temperatures cooling somewhat but I can feel the summer sun. The light is bright, the sky is a deep blue, and the grass is glowing green.

Also, RIP Oliver Tree. I stumbled on his music a few years ago and appreciate how unique and talented he was.
