I bought Scrivener a couple years ago and wrote two books with it. It's a good app and helped me to organize my writing.
More recently I subscribed to Ulysses and currently using it more.
So which is best?
Overall my ADHD self benefits from the clean UI and plain text features of Ulysses. Choosing fonts and creating layouts and illustrations switches on my graphic design mode. I get lost in the visual aesthetics of the document instead of actual writing. I need a space where I can write first, then take care of the visual aspect later.
And the coordination across Apple devices is terrific. In the morning, I read over the previous day’s work on my phone with morning coffee, then later in the day turn on the Mac to edit and write more.
The downside is the subscription aspect. I've been reviewing my services and un-subscribing from some to focus on the ones I will actually use on a regular basis, like Ulysses. I would always prefer a buy once and get occasional upgrades model. Which is where Scrivener comes in.
I also like Scrivener’s organization system, the notes and research folders and the all in one glance index card feature and being able to re-arrange the cards. The compiling function offers a variety of document sizing, which is handy if you want to see where the text falls in a particular book size.
Looks like I will use Ulysses for daily writing and creating collections of short stories and poems. Scrivener, however, would be useful for nonfiction that needs research notes at hand.
So I'm keeping both.
