Re-discovering The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has been a revelation.

The story takes me back to the late 70s and very early 80s, which was a pretty good era for me. My curiosity about the world and willingness to learn were entering hyperdrive and everything had meaning.

Also, the books are very funny and finding that level of absurdist humor and satire became increasingly rare as time went on as society became increasingly self-absorbed and serious.

My favorite character has changed over the years. Back then, my favorite was Ford Prefect, mostly because I had a crush on the actor who played him in the BBC series, and partly because “alien guy” is a safe romantic trope.

Then my favorite character was Arthur Dent, because who wouldn’t love Arthur? An ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation, he nonetheless retains his humor and stoicism.

Then there’s Slartibartfast with his wisdom. I appreciate it.

As of this re-read, my favorite character though is Zaphod Beeblebrox. I can laugh at the dumb things he does while enjoying the enthusiasm he brings to every scene.

What’s really wild about this story though, is how Douglas Adams more or less predicted tablets and hand held electronic reading and computing devices.
