With the entshittification of the internet, maybe people will re-discover the public library with its valuable resources and valuable librarians who know how to help patrons find those resources.
The libraries I visit the most are busy, which gives me hope. And no, cynical people, no; the patrons aren’t all homeless people. Libraries draw a truly diverse crowd as they should as a public, civic good.
As much as I like the internet, I think people might have been happier with analog hobbies like reading, vintage car restoring, and playing cards. Of course, I know there are people who still do those things, but it seems like a minority in comparison to the constant online outrage.
Imbalanced and unhinged views sell in an attention-based economy but the social price is too much.
