I had to DNF another book, again a romance.
This was marketed as an enemies-to-lovers and sunshine-grumpy type of book and I like those tropes. But the problem with this book was another trope: insta-love, and in this case, insta-lust with action already happening in Chapter 2. That’s not my thing. I’m more of a yearn/slow burn romance reader.
Also, the FMC and MMC were unlikeable. Now, that’s not an immediate turnoff. I think you can write interesting books about unlikeable characters. Both of my previous reads Hungerstone by Kat Dunn and The Guest by Emma Cline featured unlikeable characters but they were compelling, worthwhile reads which gave me something to think about.
But the leads in the book I DNF’d were shallow, immature, and downright mean to each other. I don’t find anything worthwhile or fun in reading about that, especially in a romance.
